This summer has been full of hard work and A LOT of vegetables. We planted an even bigger garden this year and I’m excited to share how it’s been doing!
I feel like I blinked and all of a sudden summer is coming to an end. With all that’s been going on, I haven’t had as much time to share garden updates (except for in my Instagram stories), so I completely missed a month two post.
I’ve been busy with my full-time job, keeping up with the garden, and normal summer things, but also because I’M OPENING A BUSINESS!!! I shared on social media that I’m opening a store called Core Goods in my hometown. I’m working with the owners of two local restaurants (including Karma Coffee Company, which I mention a lot on here), and we’ll have bulk bins (with beans, rice, nuts, etc), local produce, and healthy grab and go meals.
I’ll be sharing a whole post about Core Goods sometime soon, but I thought I should for sure mention it, because it’s the main reason I’ve been a little MIA on the blog. I seriously can’t tell you how excited I am to open a store with more healthy, sustainable options in my town. The idea came about because of my own personal shopping and eating habits, including my love of gardening and fresh produce. So, back to our garden…
I feel like each year I tell myself we won’t plant such a big garden, but then we do it anyways and end up overwhelmed. Right now the garden is producing a ton and it’s been a challenge to keep up with it. I honestly get stressed out thinking about food that will end up wasted because we don’t have enough time to harvest, wash, and cook it (seriously, if you live near us and want to come pick some veggies for yourself, let me know).
Besides that, we’ve had some garden fails this year, too, which can bring us down sometimes. Our corn got completely destroyed by an animal (we’re thinking a racoon), the kale and cabbage are getting eaten by cabbage worms, and we have SO MANY WEEDS.
^ This isn’t a garden fail, but check out this cool little guy I found one morning. It’s a yellow garden spider.
There are times when I wonder why we do it, but then I eat a salad made up entirely of our produce or share some veggies with a friend, and remember how amazing gardening can be. Sure, it can be challenging and tiring, but the result is 100% worth it. If you’ve ever planted a garden, even a small one, you know what I mean.
Overall, our garden has done pretty freaking great. We’ve harvested crazy amounts of kale, lettuce, summer squash, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green and banana peppers, and even a few carrots.
Just over the weekend, we weeded around our potato plants and planted a few more potatoes and onions. We probably have about 30 winter squash (acorn, butternut, and spaghetti), too, which I can’t wait to enjoy in the coming months.
A few plants are starting to slow down, like cucumbers and summer squash, but for the most part our garden is still going strong. We look forward to hopefully at least one more month of harvesting!
How has your garden been this year?
