A simple recipe for cheesy garlic bread made with just a few ingredients!
About a year ago I would have never imagined I’d be sharing a recipe on the blog with the main ingredients being bread and cheese. Whole30 taught me that these were “bad” foods and, although I absolutely loved both, I tried to avoid them at all costs (even after Whole30).
Well guess what? It’s okay to eat bread and cheese. Is garlic bread the super healthiest food you could ever eat? Definitely not, but that’s okay. The world won’t end, you won’t gain 20 pounds overnight, and you’ll actually probably be happier if you eat it than if you restrict yourself (this is, of course, if you don’t have an allergy or intolerance to gluten or dairy).
Plus, this recipe is simple and can be made healthier if you’d like! Here’s all you’ll need:
Bread
Butter
Garlic
Parmesan cheese
Italian seasoning
How can you make it healthier? When choosing your bread, you could go with 100% whole grain or wheat. Even buying local, fresh bread is a better alternative to a loaf that’s been sitting for days in the bread aisle at Walmart.
This recipe actually came about because I was making garlic bread last minute with dinner all the time and I would usually just use whatever bread I already had, which is normally some type of whole grain. I’ve also made it with a giant loaf of fresh French bread (that’s what you see in the photos here) and sourdough.
Also, choose a good quality butter, such as grass fed or ghee. I personally only use ghee now that I discovered it. Ghee is clarified butter, meaning the milk proteins are removed and you’re left with a bright yellow and smooth butter with great flavor. If you’re intolerant of dairy, it’s the perfect alternative to normal butter. You can make ghee yourself by simmering and straining it or you can purchase it from a store (I get mine from Thrive Market).
I also suggest getting some quality, fresh parmesan too! Skip the already grated stuff in the plastic tub and go for the block you can grate yourself. It’s even better if you can find it from someone local.
Now I’m not suggesting you eat garlic bread for every meal, every day of your life, but it is okay to enjoy that fresh baked garlic bread with your spaghetti or zucchini noodles when you want it! Enjoy ♥
Cheesy Garlic Bread
Prep: | Cook: | Yield: 10 pieces of bread | Total: |
A simple recipe for cheesy garlic bread made with just a few ingredients!
You'll Need...
- 10 pieces of bread
- 2 tablespoons butter or ghee
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Spread about ½ teaspoon of butter and ¼ teaspoon minced garlic on each piece of bread and evenly place on a large baking sheet.
- Once all pieces are covered and added to baking sheet, add to oven and bake for about 5 minutes.
- Remove from oven and turn oven temperature to broil.
- Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of Italian seasoning to each piece of bread.
- Add bread back to oven and bake another 3-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is brown on the edges.
Additional Notes
The baking times depend on the thickness of your bread. This recipe is based off of about 1 inch thick French bread.
All of these measurements are estimated and it depends on the size and number of your pieces of bread. It’s really hard to mess the the bread up besides leaving it in the oven too long and burning it. Once each piece is evenly covered with butter, you can add as much of the other ingredients as you would prefer, depending on how garlicky, cheesy, or seasoned you’d like it.
