Ditch the bagged popcorn and make this easy stovetop popcorn!
For my very first blog post, I thought I’d make something simple that almost everyone loves: popcorn! I can’t deny it—I absolutely love going to the movie theater and drowning my bucket of popcorn in extra butter—but it doesn’t always have to be that way! Popcorn can actually be a super healthy snack. I’ve started popping my own popcorn at home and it’s so easy and delicious.
Popcorn is a whole grain and a great low calorie and healthy snack! Unfortunately, most people eat microwave popcorn that comes pre-packaged with artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemicals to prevent grease from soaking through the bag, among many other things.
Popcorn can be prepared in a much healthier way that’s just as easy! Of course there are all kinds of fancy popcorn machines out there, but I keep it simple and use a kitchen pot. Because this process really depends on the size of the pot you’re using, it can be hard to actually give measurements of ingredients, so you may need to adjust depending on your pot.
Add the kernels to the pot, shake periodically, and that’s it! How easy is that? And then the fun part: seasoning! I have many different seasonings I add to my popcorn, including Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute, homemade taco seasoning (this recipe, without the meat or water), and homemade ranch seasoning:
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon dried chives
½ teaspoon dried dill
½ teaspoon parsley flakes
salt and pepper to taste
After learning how easy popcorn is to make on the stove, it’s my go-to snack! I usually put the popcorn in reusable baggies or containers and enjoy it all week or have it in a giant bowl on movie nights at home with Zack. If you love popcorn as much as I do, pick up some coconut or avocado oil and kernels at the store and get to popping!
Easy Stovetop Popcorn
Prep: | Total: |
Ditch the bagged popcorn and make this easy stovetop popcorn with coconut oil!
You'll Need...
- ¼ cup coconut or avocado oil
- ¾ cup popcorn kernels
- Seasoning (see ideas in blog post above)
Directions
- In a large pot (I use a 4-quart pot), add the oil and one popcorn kernel and heat on medium/high. The oil should cover the bottom of the pot and be about 1/8 inch high, so you may need to add more if your pot is bigger.
- Wait until the one popcorn kernel pops and then add the remainder of the kernels. The kernels should be in one layer and all should be touching the oil, so you may need to to adjust the amount of kernels depending on your pot.
- Cover and shake every 20-30 seconds to spread the kernels around and prevent any burning.
- When the popping slows down with several seconds between each pop, remove from heat and give one final shake.

So, I go through phases where all I want is popcorn and phase where I don’t care about it all. I just finished the last page of popcorn and The Hubs and I are both craving it. I might have to run and get some kernals from our local grocery and make a stovetop batch tonight!

Jen, I’m the same exact way! I’ll eat it everyday for weeks and then won’t have it for a couple weeks after that. Luckily I’ve found a lot of easy, healthy snacks I also love, to have during those times I’m not feeling the popcorn!
