An easy and healthy alternative to store-bought taco seasoning, made with spices already in your kitchen!
Feliz Cinco de Mayo! I know, it’s not for another few days, but I can’t wait to celebrate! Let me rephrase… I can’t wait to EAT 🙂
While I love almost any type of food, there’s just something about Mexican food that makes me extra happy. A huge part of this is probably because my family loves to go to our local Mexican restaurant for most birthdays, anniversaries, or really any reason we can go. Here’s a gem from my 21st birthday after consuming a VERY large margarita:
There are so many Mexican dishes I love, but unfortunately, with the chips, tortillas, cheese, etc., it can get pretty unhealthy. My favorite dish to order is shrimp fajitas, which is just a bunch of vegetables and shrimp. For some special occasions, I’ll indulge in tortilla chips, rice, and maybe even some queso, but there really are healthy options when going out for Mexican food!
Enough with the chat, let’s get down to business: tacos. Tacos can be unhealthy too, but you don’t always have to eat the corn tortilla, cheese, and sour cream. One of my favorite ways to eat tacos is in a romaine lettuce wrap with guacamole and hot sauce on top!
As for the seasoning, store-bought is not the best option. Look at the back of the package and you’ll see ingredients such as maltodextrin (a food additive), sugar, soybean oil, ethoxyquin (a preservative), and more. Yeah, not the best thing to put into your body. Luckily, homemade taco seasoning is SO easy!
This seasoning has only seven ingredients, which are all familiar spices you probably already have on hand! I encourage you to try to be healthy with other ingredients too, including:
- Make your own salsa or guacamole (find my recipe here) or read labels and avoid unfamiliar ingredients and sugar
- Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream
- Choose healthier cheeses, such as mozzarella
- Swap out ground beef for chicken or ground turkey
A special occasion like Cinco de Mayo doesn’t mean you have to stop eating healthy for a day. There are so many ways to keep on track but still enjoy some great Mexican food!
